Short Track Speedskating

Short track speedskating is a relatively new addition to the Olympic family. The first official medal rounds were held at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville. Short track races are fast paced events that pit skaters against one another rather than against the clock. Athletes race in heats of four to six competitors with the fastest two skaters from each heat advancing to the next round. The track is a 111 meter course on a standard international hockey rink. Events are typically held for distances of 500 meters, 1000 meters, 1500 meters and 3000 meters for individuals, while relay teams compete over distances of 3000 meters and 5000 meters. Short track medal events at the Nagano Winter Games are scheduled as follows:
